Get excited, Blazers— it’s officially Spirit Week 2024!
Spirit Week 2024 kicked off with a cozy and sweet pajama and pie day Monday.
Historically, North High’s spirit weeks have always been full of excitement and camaraderie. The week leading up to homecoming has always helped the community come together, as students and faculty alike await anxiously for the big culminating sports events at the end of the week.
Pajama Day is widely regarded as the most comfortable day of the year. Students arrive at school in coordinated pajamas with their friends, embracing the opportunity to showcase their casual and cozy attire. This day allows both students and teachers to participate. By starting off the week in pajamas, North High demonstrates its school spirit in a fun way.
“Even though a lot of kids come to school in PJs every day, it was nice to have a day dedicated to it either way,” junior Naomi Zarnighian said.
Following a day filled with school spirit, the festivities continued with a lively pie-eating contest held on the front lawn. Two representatives from each grade—one boy and one girl—participated in the event, attempting to finish their whipped cream pies without using their hands.
As students settled around the table with their phones ready to record, contestants prepared for the daunting task. A teacher counted down “3…2…1…”, and they were off! The crowd watched anxiously as the contestants struggled to finish the pies without their hands. A few painstaking minutes crawled by, and the contestants seemed to begin to slow down. The finish line was near, but it was unclear who was in the lead.
Eventually, the contestants’ heads began to rise from tin foil trays. As the throng of students tiptoed and craned their necks to get a closer look, two smiling faces, smeared with whipped cream, emerged.
The senior class, represented by volleyball captain Isabella Brown and treasurer Gilad Rahmanan, ultimately emerged victorious, prompting cheers and chants throughout the crowd.
“It was so funny to see whipped cream on everyone’s faces,” said senior Derick Zheng.
The contest drew a large crowd of students and teachers, all eager to watch the playful competition unfold. Laughter and cheers filled the air as participants raced to finish their pies.
This beloved tradition is a highlight of the week, as the entire school community looks forward to the intense competition and excitement.
“It was a sharp contrast to the chillness of PJ day,” said senior Zoe Chung.
Pie eating is always a fun and highly anticipated tradition at North High’s spirit weeks. Students always love participating in and watching this event. Who doesn’t want to get whipped cream all over their face as hundreds of students stand around and cheer you on?
