After decades of dedicated work towards shaping the school’s community, our beloved dean and educator has decided to embark on a new chapter of her life and retire from teaching. Mrs. Behar’s presence in North High has been a constant source of positivity, energy, passion, and assurance. As she has defined such a significant era at North High, Mrs. Behar’s leaving marks more than just a retirement, for she has left an everlasting imprint left on our school.
As a North High alumni, Mrs. Behar’s connection to the school strives far beyond her years as staff.
“It’s home…I have such sentimental and strong feelings about these halls,” Mrs. Behar said.
Not only did Mrs. Behar graduate from North High, but her father did as well in 1959. And because her mother also spent 35 years working in the district, Mrs. Behar’s legacy significantly lives on.
With original dreams of “playing field hockey in the Olympics” and being “the first female sports broadcaster on ESPN,” she began her college career at the University of Maryland as a journalism major before transferring to Hofstra, where she changed her major to English and Secondary Education. She then started coaching at North High in 1989 and teaching in 1996 when transferred from South High.
“I always thought I would teach or coach at some point,” Mrs. Behar said.
Although she is “mixed about leaving,” Mrs. Behar feels the time is right as she plans to be completely present in the lives of her children who have been progressing their careers.
“I want to enjoy the empty nest feeling and I want to be at every lacrosse game humanly possible for my girls’ senior year,” Mrs. Behar said.
Mrs. Behar has played an eternal role at North High as an English teacher, coach, dean, and colleague and will be remembered for the great impact she’s left on others through her unwavering encouragement and radiant positivity. From being a student to a leader, Mrs. Behar’s journey embodies dedication, care, and passion for what she does, making her part at North High even more lasting.
“One of my favorite sayings is ‘Giddy Up,’ Mrs. Behar said. “I am excited to ride off into the sunset from my time here at North High and to find my new green pasture, wherever and whatever that may be.”
