For more than 20 years, Mr. Hidasi has been a steady and compassionate figure at North High, quietly shaping the lives of the students he works with. Now in his 25th year at North and his 28th year as a guidance counselor, his work has impacted thousands of students. Before coming to North he worked for three years at Mount Vernon, but it’s in Great Neck that Mr. Hidasi, affectionately known as Pedro, became a key figure, especially in Community School, where he describes himself as its “heart.”
As a licensed counselor with a master’s degree in social work, Mr. Hidasi has much experience in therapeutic work, having spent 10 years in social work before becoming a guidance counselor. That experience shapes how he interacts with his students, especially when they come to him with personal struggles. From family and social issues to mental health, he provides a safe space for students to talk and be heard.
“I think I’m good at therapeutic work,” he says. He wishes more students would come to him not only for academic advice but also for personal support. “That’s a part of my role I really enjoy.”
He’s also involved in helping his students achieve their future goals. Mr Hidasi helps students navigate the challenging and overwhelming college application process, guiding them anywhere from early conversations about goals and interests, to choosing where to go to attend college in the days leading up to commitment day. “We slowly introduce students to what’s involved, what colleges look for, and what options are available,” he says. “It’s about helping students explore who they are and what they want.”
Outside of school, Mr. Hidasi loves to travel, hike, and explore nature.
In the Community School program, or CS, which he joined in the 2002-2003 school year, Mr. Hidasi plays an important and special role. He’s not a traditional authority figure but something “closer to a cool uncle” or mentor,” he says.
“Although there have been different kids, different times and different communities, the ideals have remained the same: creating a space where enthusiastic young people feel encouraged and supported.”
Although you might know his name or see him as a familiar face in the guidance office, Mr. Hidasi’s work has altered the lives of many students at North and in Community School. Who knows, you may be next!
