Boris Johnson’s Winning Slogan: “Get Brexit Done”

Friday the 13th was anything but unlucky for Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom, as on that day Johnson was elected Prime Minister of the UK.

Not only did Johnson achieve a major victory in the election, but his Conservative Party also won an overwhelming majority of the seats in Parliament. Now that he has become Prime Minister, voters have turned their attention to one particular campaign promise that appealed to millions: “Get Brexit Done.”

Brexit refers to the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, an economic and political union of 28 European countries. The E.U. allows for free trade and movement of people to live and work in any member country of their choice.

In a 2016 referendum, 52% of people in the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union while 48% voted to stay. As a result, Brexit was scheduled to happen at the end of March. However, Parliament continued to reject the then Prime Minister Theresa May׳s deal, leading to her resignation.

With Johnson winning a whopping 365 seats, he is expected to be able to pass the Brexit deal through the Parliament which finally allows the United Kingdom to separate from the European Union. As Johnson said on Friday morning: “This election means that getting Brexit done is now the irrefutable, irresistible, unarguable decision of the British people.”

As of December 20, 2019, the MPs 358 to 234 in favor of the E.U. (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill. This bill sets the Brexit date for January 31, 2020, while banning an extension of the transition period, during which the UK is out of the E.U. but still follows many of its rules, past 2020.

The Labour Party, Johnson’s main opposition, only secured 203 seats in the Parliament. This has been seen by many voters as a direct result of the Party’s leader, Jeremy Corbyn. Following the recent election, Conservatives were able to take seats that have traditionally gone to the Labour Party.

Johnson was able to accomplish this shift by breaking down the “Red Wall.” Since red is the traditional color of the Labour Party, the “Red Wall” refers to areas of the United Kingdom that have historically and traditionally always voted for the Labour Party. However, for this election, many of these long-time Labour voters united in favor of Brexit and voted for Johnson.

“It’s like the country is turning upside down… As bizarre as it seems, Boris and Donald Trump connect with working-class voters,” said Lee Anderson, a candidate of the Conservative Party in Ashfield. “People like plain English.” The people of Ashfield have generally voted for the Labour Party in previous elections, but the most recent one demonstrated a notable shift from this norm.

Alongside many voters in the UK, President Trump was also ecstatic. On Friday, President Trump congratulated Johnson on his election victory, looking forward to future deals with the newly re-elected Prime Minister.

“Congratulations to Boris Johnson on his great WIN! Britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new Trade Deal after BREXIT,” Trump tweeted. “This deal has the potential to be far bigger and more lucrative than any deal that could be made with the E.U. Celebrate Boris!”
