The New Homecoming
November 2, 2017
Many students voiced their discontent on social media after the Girls Varsity Volleyball team agreed to host Homecoming this year. Some felt this change would violate the traditional Homecoming, since the event would be held at a girls sport rather than boys.
Bleachers were filled to the brim, cheerleaders shook their poms uproariously, and the team proved doubters wrong. After four challenging rounds against the Bethpage Eagles, with a concluding 3-1 score, Blazers made it to playoffs.
Athletes suffered a loss when the Eagles claimed the second point, causing tension to boil. Cheers became shouts, and Benchwarmers abandoned their seats to cheer for fellow teammates.
Senior Ariella Yahoudaee, who has been an athlete for every season since her freshman year, reflected that she, “… felt the need to prove something to the school about girls volleyball”. Motivated by Coach Nastri as well as her teammates, she admits to the intensity and challenge of this game, but feels happy to have had tremendous support.
The athletes will advance to playoffs later this year, more intent on winning than ever. It is unclear as to what next year holds in terms of Homecoming, but regardless, the school should prepare for an unforgettable game!
