The Met Gala is eagerly anticipated by millions of fans each year.  The night marks one of the most glamorous events in the fashion industry.  This year’s Met Gala took place on May 1st and there was a great deal of discussion following the event.  

Met Gala is an annual fundraiser held by Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Magazine, to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The event provides a realm where celebrities can interpret a theme in a manner that represents them, while fans are able to watch and admire their favorite celebrities while also critiquing outfits that do not display the full caliber of the Met Gala.

The theme for this year’s Met Gala was “in honor of Karl,” meant to provide homage to German designer Karl Lagerfeld, who is best known for his work with Chanel.  Lagerfeld’s biggest contribution to the world of fashion was re-introducing tweed into high-fashion.  Tweed was seen in many outfits throughout the night, taking inspiration from Lagerfeld’s designs. 

The theme kindled a lot of controversy because Lagerfeld was also known for his cruel nature.  Lagerfeld frequently made hateful remarks regarding a variety of different topics.  Many celebrities chose not to attend this year’s Met Gala as a means of boycotting the theme. 

Many fans were also critical of the execution of the theme, who complained that more extravagant outfits had been produced in previous years

“I think the theme did not give the stars an opportunity to show off their fashion abilities,” said junior Lily Weiner. “Some stars did come through like Emma Chamberlain, Doja Cat, and Anne Hathaway while others were too casual. I think the theme was not specific enough and I was very underwhelmed with the execution of the outfits. All the stars looked the same and I didn’t see anything that made me say ‘Wow’.”

Junior Sophia Rosenberg also shared her opinion on the theme, “ I think the theme could’ve been executed better, as Karl Lagerfield’s work with Chanel was world-changing. However, I understand the lack of passion for the theme and think honoring someone like Coco Chanel would have been better.”

Many celebrities also received praise for their delivery of the theme. As one of the co-chairs for the 2023 Met Gala, many people were expecting Dua Lipa to showcase a glamorous outfit. Lipa wore a 1992 Chanel ball gown originally worn by Claudia Schiffer.

“My favorite outfit of the night was worn by Dua Lipa,” said junior Sasha Livian. “Her dress was beautiful and perfectly on theme, said Junior Sasha Livian.”

Another celebrity whose outfit received significant attention was Jared Leto. Leto wore a cat costume to the Gala and his intention was to dress up as Lagerfeld’s cat.

This year’s Met Gala marked one of controversy and glamor. Clearly, it will not be forgotten for a long time.
