The Grammy Awards, one of the most prestigious arts and music award ceremonies in the world, are held every year to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of talented musicians in the industry. With the recent release of the 2026 nominations comes excitement, disappointment and controversy.
The coveted title of Album of the Year is widely considered to be the most prestigious of the Grammy Awards. Out of this year’s eight nominees, none have previously lifted the award, meaning the winner will be a powerful first no matter the outcome. Artists such as Bad Bunny, nominated for his recent album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS,” and Kendrick Lamar, nominated for “GNX,” have previously received the nomination but have never before won the award. Likewise, artists such as Leon Thomas, nominated for his album “Mutt,” and Tyler The Creator, nominated for “Chromakopia,” are receiving their first ever nominations in the category as solo artists. Other nominees include Sabrina Carpenter for “Man’s Best Friend,” Clips for “Let God Sort ‘Em Out” and Justin Bieber for “Swag.”

“I’m not usually a huge fan of the Grammys, but this year I really hope Tyler wins it. It’ll be interesting no matter who gets it though,” junior Momchil Yanchev said.
Apart from the Album of the Year category, many other awards will be given out at the ceremony which will take place on Feb. 1, 2026. Among the prizes is the award for Record of the Year, awarded to the best overall single recording and the artist, producers and recording engineers that contributed to the development of the song. Both Sabrina Carpenter and Bad Bunny are nominated for tracks off their aforementioned albums, while Doechii, looking to follow up after her 2025 triumph in the Rap Album of the Year category, received a nomination for her song “Anxiety,” which has amassed over 400 million streams on Spotify alone. Further categories include Song of the Year and Best New Artist, the latter of which will be awarded to one of the premier breakthrough musicians in the industry. Nominees include Sombr, Alex Warren and KATSEYE.

“There really isn’t a single breakout star this year that stands out above the rest. It’s going to be a close race and you can’t really tell who’s going to win with such a diverse range of artists,” junior Warren Harilal said.
While the artists nominated for the various award categories are widely considered to be the best in their respective genres, controversy arises year after year over certain artists that were not included in the nominations. This year is no different, as prominent artists such as The Weeknd, Lorde and Gracie Abrams were overlooked in the nominations, leading many to call for unfair selection, citing that these artists, among others, were more deserving of a nomination than those that actually got it. This year is also the first year the Grammys have implemented a randomized ballot system, which gives each voter a unique, randomized order of entries rather than an alphabetic list. This new system has drawn criticism, with some stating that veteran artists previously listed higher on the ballot were disadvantaged.
“It’s a lot more fair than the previous system, no doubt. Obviously people are going to be mad but at the end of the day it’s about the artists first,” junior Jay Wu said.
When the Grammys take place this coming February, the world is going to tune in. Despite the controversial nature of who was and wasn’t nominated, it’s clear that this year will be no different from every other – the best musical artists on the planet being awarded for their incredible talent and entertaining performances.
