Halloween Parade

Halloween Parade

With the school decorated, boxes of candy in all the department rooms, and students and teachers dressed in unique costumes, clearly today is no ordinary day – it is Halloween. Students could not contain their excitement beneath their freaky costumes, wigs, and colorful makeup as they bustled down the big gym hallway. From an outsider’s perspective, it may have seemed like a crowded and chaotic line of animal onesies and grouped costumes, but no matter if his or her costume was fabulously flashy or ingeniously funny, every student demonstrated enthusiasm and spirit for the annual Halloween Parade at Great Neck North.

As per tradition, the Halloween Parade consisted of students confidently showing off unique, humorous, and creative costumes. Energetic contestants stride past their supportive peers, cheering from the bleachers, hoping to win a $100 check for the best costume (or $50 as the runner-up). This year’s Halloween Parade featured animal onesies, inflatable costumes, and many group outfits. Spotted cows, woodland creatures, and orange fugitives walked across the gym floor in matching outfits with friends. Paired costumes included a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the brothers Luigi and Mario, as well as Ash and Pikachu. Other duos included Hulk and Batman, a zombie and a trash bag, and a giraffe-like runner and his coach. Students who chose to dress independently strutted the gym floors as a baby on a grandma’s back, Mr. Potatohead, and, quite bittersweet, a high school graduate.

Before the winners could be determined, the kilties and cheerleaders performed following a Grease theme; The kilties dressed up in bomber jackets, while the cheerleaders were the Pink Ladies.

Another tradition continued by this year’s Halloween Parade was the Teacher Competitions, which included an intense game of musical chairs and an extreme cage ball match. Teachers contended against each other as either Snoopy, Wonder Woman, or a bottle of spice. The teachers’ musical chairs was amusing to watch. Dr. Berzins and Ms. Ostrover faced off in the final round. Much to the students’ joy (or despair), Dr. Berzins was named the winner.

The teachers then participated in a sweaty game of cage ball, running around the gym to keep the heavy ball from falling on their own side.

Saving the best for last, the lucky winners of the 2017-2018 Halloween Fair were finally announced. Although the costumes captured the heart of the student body, Audrey Yeganeh and Adena Etaat creatively dressed as shower curtain ladies, ultimately earning them $100, along with pride for having the best costume in the school. Kelly Chau, the runner-up, was awarded with $50 for her costume as a green inflatable person.

As per usual, everyone had a memorable time laughing with their peers, making Halloween in school even more special.
