With college around the corner, some parents are increasingly more concerned regarding the financial assistance needed for their child (ren) to attend a city or state school. After filling out FAFSA, the eligibility of an undergraduate or graduate student to receive financial aid is determined. If eligible, parents with an annual income of less than $100,000 can send their child (ren) to any CUNY or SUNY school for free. Along with FAFSA, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Excelsior Scholarship allows families who have an income of less than $100,000 annually to send a child to college tuition free. This scholarship does not include rooming, meal plans, transportation, or textbooks; however, there is an extension of resources to prevent high spending on books. Students who opt for this plan are required to maintain a high grade point average, and must live in New York for the same amount of time they received aid. Without living and/or working in the state, the scholarship turns into a loan that one will unfortunately need to pay off. FAFSA and the Excelsior Scholarship grant students the opportunity to pursue an education beyond high school.
