A group containing four very different nations. Group A starts with a rematch of the 2010 opening match, Mexico vs. South Africa. Whilst many of these countries have very underwhelming squads, South Korea and whoever wins the FIFA play-off D (most likely Denmark) are most likely to advance automatically. LAFC and South Korean soccer legend Heung Min Son is facing one of his last chances to make a run with South Korea in an international tournament this summer.

A somewhat underwhelming group, the European outfit that qualifies for Group B will automatically become the favorites. However, despite the odds, host country Canada is hoping to reach the knockout stage for the first time in its history. With star striker Jonathan David and Canadian legend Alphonso Davies, nothing seems impossible. A resilient Swiss national team with the likes of Granit Xhaka and Gregor Kobel is also looking to make noise at this year’s World Cup. Whilst reigning Asian cup champions Qatar may cause an upset, the odds seem ever stacked against the Arab nation.

A group filled with legendary stars and young new talent, Group C remains unpredictable. Five-time champions Brazil look favored to win the group and the tournament, but face heavy opposition from their early opponents. A young Moroccan team became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals in 2022 and is looking to go far in the tournament once again. Meanwhile, Scotland’s Scott McTominay has had a resurgence since leaving Manchester United in the summer of 2024 and has led the Tartan Army to their first World Cup since 1998. The island of Haiti has also clawed itself onto the most significant international stage in history and looks to cause a stir in this group of titans.

It’s now or never for the United States of America. With one of the most talented groups of American soccer players in decades, alongside the combined advantage of playing on home soil, Christian Pulisic looks to lead the United States to World Cup glory. Australia and Paraguay have had solid World Cup qualifying campaigns, but whichever European country makes it into Group D will be seen as heavy favorites alongside America to move on.

A German team seeking redemption is the narrative for Group E. The European giants have failed to reach the knockout phase in back-to-back World Cups. Under the helm of coach Julain Nagglesman, they look to put their demons to bed finally. Whilst the stories of the Ivory Coast and the tiny Curacao are heartwarming, the defensive might of Ecuador may be too much for them. Bolstering centre-backs Piero Hincapie of Arsenal and William Pacho of PSG, the South American outfit looks likely to advance.

Perhaps not the most entertaining group, but Group F promises quality athleticism. The Netherlands, led by Virgil Van Dijk, is looking to improve on its quarter-final run in the previous tournament, whilst Japan is looking to capitalize on what seems to be a resurgence of quality out of Asia. Whilst a potential European qualifier and Tunisia look like solid competition, the Netherlands and Japan look favored to advance.

A Belgian avalanche is surely in store for Group G. With the embarrassment of 2022 behind them, Belgium is looking to make it back to the pinnacle of excellence. Aging stars Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku look to make their final stand on the biggest stage. Egypt looks second-favorite to win the group, with Premier League superstars Mohammed Salah and Omar Marmoush looking to bring glory to the North African country. Whilst Iran and New Zealand contain incredible strikers, Chris Wood and Mehdi Taremi respectively, they aren’t able to match the star power of Belgium or Egypt.

The reigning European champions set their eyes on the world. Youngsters Lamine Yamal and Pedri of Barcelona are looking to bring La Roja back to the glory of 2010. Spain entered the tournament as heavy favorites and was given a relatively straightforward draw. Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia don’t look to have the depth to make a deep run in the World Cup, leaving a stagnating Uruguay team likely to scrape out of the group phase.

This group contains a clash of all-time greats. France’s Kylian Mbappé and Norway’s Erling Haaland face off in a World Cup game for the ages. Their national teams look favored to advance from Group I, as they contain two of the greatest players in the world. Senegal’s persistence from an aging squad containing Sadio Mane may cause some disruption, but France and Norway look heavy favorites not only to advance but to win the tournament.
“I see Haaland as the frontrunner for the World Cup top scorer,” junior Atharv Malpani said.

An in-form Argentina team seeks to regain its past glory. Coming off a historic World Cup win, Lionel Messi’s side aims to achieve the impossible this summer. Argentina is clearly the favorite in the group, but underrated Austria will also likely qualify. Filled with talented stars like Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer, they look to make moves in their first World Cup since 1998.
“If Messi and Argentina win the World Cup again, it would be the greatest achievement in sports history,” junior Jay Wu said.

The final dance for one of the greatest of all time. Cristiano Ronaldo looks to cement his legacy in what will be undoubtedly his final international tournament with Portugal. With a strong team around him, including Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha, the European nation looks a firm favorite to advance and make a run in this year’s tournament. A strong Colombian side also looked eager to leave an impression. Finalists of last year’s Copa America, the South Americans look likely to progress over first-time qualifiers Uzbekistan and the other mystery nation.
“I really want Ronaldo to win the World Cup,” junior Emet Greenblatt said.

Can Football finally come home? England have been chanting about winning it all ever since their first and only tournament win in 1966. Stars like Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka look to make English dreams come true this summer. The only truly meaningful competition in this group for a strong English side is Croatia, coming off back-to-back impressive World Cup campaigns. The timeless Luka Modric looks sure to lead his team through this group.

With a sport as unpredictable as soccer, titans are toppled and favorites flunk out in the group stage. Which country will achieve glory, and which sides will fail to impress? It’s all to play for at the FIFA World Cup this summer.
