The two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, released in 2024 and 2025, has drawn significant public attention, much of it centered on its lead actors Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. From early skepticism about casting to online rumors and social media speculation, the project has become an example of how performers navigate intense scrutiny while promoting a major studio release. Despite the controversy surrounding its development, both films have performed strongly at the box office and received positive audience reactions.
It felt like every week there was a new theory or rumor about the movie,” junior Eden Rosenberg said. “At some point the drama almost became bigger than the film itself.”
When casting was announced, some fans questioned whether Ariana, best known as a pop singer, could take on the role of Glinda. Others were unfamiliar with Cynthia, a British stage performer cast as Elphaba. Concerns ranged from vocal ability to overall fit for the roles. Those doubts eased as more information about their backgrounds circulated. Ariana began her career in musical theater and had long expressed admiration for Wicked, while Cynthia held major stage awards for previous Broadway work. Both have said they approached the roles with care and understood the expectations attached to them.

“Once the trailers dropped, it was like everyone suddenly remembered this was supposed to be about the performances,” freshman Emma Cohen said. “Hearing them sing shut down a lot of the doubts.”
Throughout production and promotion, online rumors claimed the two leads were experiencing tension on set. Tabloids and social media accounts circulated unverified reports of disagreements and some posts suggested issues of pay equity or competition for screen time. Universal Pictures denied reports of a pay gap and said both actors were compensated equally. Neither Ariana nor Cynthia publicly confirmed any conflict.
Public opinion shifted after trailers for Wicked: Part One were released. Early reviews responded positively to the performances. Ariana’s portrayal of Glinda drew praise for tone and delivery, while Cynthia’s Elphaba was noted for strong vocals and emotional depth. The film opened with strong ticket sales and performed well during awards season. The second installment is scheduled for release in late 2025.
“Watching the reaction flip from skepticism to excitement was kind of wild,” junior Daniella Kafash said. ” It showed how fast opinions can change once people see actual footage instead of just speculation.”
Both performers, however, faced personal scrutiny at the height of the promotional campaign. In 2023 and 2024, changes in Ariana’s appearance led to widespread speculation about her weight and health, including unfounded rumors about an eating disorder. Ariana asked the public not to comment on her body, saying that appearance is not a reliable indicator of health. Health experts echoed the sentiment, cautioning against speculation about medical conditions based solely on photographs or video.

Cynthia also encountered online criticism. After a fan circulated an altered version of the film’s poster that minimized her presence, she responded sharply on social media. Some observers viewed the reaction as disproportionate, while others saw it as a justified response to concerns about representation. She later said the reaction reflected her investment in the project. The issue dissipated quickly but underscored the sensitivities that can arise in promotional campaigns.
During the international press tour in 2025, a security breach at the Singapore premiere drew widespread attention. A man ran onto the red carpet and approached Ariana before security intervened. Video of the incident showed Cynthia stepping between the man and her co-star. The footage went viral and public response was largely supportive.

“After the red carpet incident, you could see how genuinely they supported each other,” sophomore Leila Sanieoff said. “It cut through all the rumors and made the whole situation feel more grounded.”
As Wicked: Part Two approaches release, the public narrative surrounding the films has shifted. Early backlash has given way to enthusiasm and the two performers have continued appearing together at promotional events. Media coverage has noted their consistent professionalism and steady public messages about collaboration. Both have emphasized their commitment to delivering a faithful and compelling adaptation of the original stage musical.
The experience of the Wicked films illustrates the challenges that accompany high-profile roles in the social media era. Rumor cycles, fan speculation and intense visibility shaped much of the conversation during the production process. Even so, the films have been commercially successful and widely embraced by audiences. As the second installment nears release, attention has largely returned to the performances and the adaptation itself rather than the controversies that preceded them.
