A night of rivalry, creativity and high energy took over the gym as students competed in this year’s Battle of the Classes. From themed costumes to exciting competitions, the event brought the entire school together for a night of unforgettable moments and spirited fun.
Seniors captured the overall victory, with sophomores finishing second, juniors in third and freshmen in fourth, ending off a week full of spirited events and themed fun.
“I thought we did really well overall for it only being our second Battle,” sophomore Shira Khoda said. “Our dance was especially fun to watch.”
Spirit Week leading up to Battle was slightly shortened due to snow days on Monday and Tuesday, but students still made Spirit Week count. Wednesday kicked off with Pajama Day, where cozy and creative sleepwear filled the hallways. Thursday featured Class Colors and Family Feud, sparking friendly competition and loud cheers from classmates. Sophomores beat the freshmen in the first half of Family Feud, while the seniors dominated the juniors in their matchup, placing the seniors and sophomores ahead before Saturday’s festivities. Friday’s Formal Friday wrapped up the themed week, setting the stage for the main event on Saturday night.
Posters were displayed in the hallway in the week leading up to Battle, following North High’s yearly tradition. This allows anticipation to build while students try to guess which class’s poster will win the poster category.
Saturday, February 28, from 7 to 9 p.m., was the long-awaited Battle of the Classes. Each grade arrived ready to compete, bringing unique themes that highlighted their creativity and school spirit. The freshmen embraced “Flashback Freshmen,” rocking vibrant 90s outfits with neon colors and retro jerseys. Sophomores’ theme was “Safari Sophomores,” sporting safari gear and jungle animal costumes. Juniors chose “Jailbreak Juniors,” wearing cop and prison uniforms, while seniors cosplayed as “High School Musical,” dressing as cheerleaders, basketball players and characters like Gabriella, Troy and Sharpay.
“I thought the senior theme was unique this year,” senior Sophia Li said. “I’m also not surprised we won, since seniors win practically every year.”
In the poster contest, sophomores took first place, followed by freshmen, juniors and seniors. Cageball saw the juniors claim victory, while sophomores, seniors and freshmen trailed behind. Tug-of-war drew loud cheers as grades battled for every inch of rope and the basketball balance-and-run challenge tested coordination and teamwork. The firefighter costume race added comedy and excitement, as students navigated the course in bulky gear.
Dance performances were a long-awaited highlight, showcasing each grade’s creativity and cohesion. Seniors led with their “High School Musical” themed routine, followed by sophomores, juniors and freshmen.
Points accumulated throughout the year also played a role in the final results. Participation in past Spirit Weeks and school events gave seniors and sophomores an early boost. While juniors performed exceptionally well during Battle, the combination of accumulated points and strong performances helped the seniors secure the overall win.
“ This year’s Battle was really disappointing this year,” junior Chandra Lin said. “After watching, I thought juniors were sure to finish in first or second due to all our event wins, but I guess we didn’t show out enough during spirit week”.
This year’s Battle of the Classes once again highlighted teamwork, school pride and creativity. From costumes and choreography to thrilling competitions and cheering crowds, the event left students with memories that will last long after the points were tallied. Students will just have to wait patiently to see what next year’s Battle holds.
